Certificate for a Limited Edition Don Troiani Print From American Coins and Collectibles
Among the most popular historical artists of all time, Don Troiani would thoroughly research a subject before ever putting brush to canvas. This led to some of the most realistic and detailed paintings and prints on the market. The presently offered lot is one of those pieces. Titled “New York’s Bravest – The Firemen and the Irishmen at the Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861”, this limited edition print was originally issued in 2002 and is hand-signed and numbered by the artist. It was published by Historical Art Prints of Southbury, Connecticut in a limited edition of 1000 from the original oil painting (this print is number 110 of 1000). Originally sent to support two Union artillery batteries on Henry Hill, the men of the 11th New York, the Fire Zouaves, were staggered by the fire of several Confederate units and forced to retreat. Several Union regiments were sent in piecemeal to stabilize the line, but each failed in its turn. Soon it was time for the 69thNew York State Militia, comprised predominantly of Irish-Americans and led by Colonel Michael Corcoran,to advance. Following the Stars and Stripes, as well as the green banner of Ireland, the men surged into the chaos of the battle, only to be repulsed by concerted Confederate fire. During the melee, the bearer of the green flag was wounded and the banner in danger of capture. Captain Jack Wildey bravely led a mixed group of his Zouaves and members of the 69th in an effort to rescue the flag. Though both New York regiments were forced to leave the field, the flag was saved. This print depicts that heroic action, as only Don Troiani can portray it. Many of the important individuals involved in this scene are noted in the margins at the top and bottom. The image measures 20” x 29½”, with the overall dimensions being 24½” x 31½”. Print is unmounted and unframed. Includes corresponding certificate of authenticity.
